Mega Yachts. A yacht which over 30 meters (100 ft) and professionally crewed is a luxury yacht or a super yacht. It may be either a sailing or motor yacht.
History. The term Mega Yacht and Luxury Yacht has been existed since the beginning of the 20th century when rich people produced large personal yachts for their enjoyment. For example, Cox & King yachts, M/Y (motor yacht) Christiana O and M/Y Savarona are the early luxury motor yachts. Americas Cup classic J class racers like S/Y (sailing yacht) endeavour and Sir Thomas Lipton’s S/Y Shamrock are the early Mega sailing yachts. During the Gilded Age, the New York Yacht Club held lots of early luxury sailing yacht events at Newport, Rhode Island.
Today. The amount and popularity of large personal Mega Yachts has been rising up over the last decades. Luxury yachts or Mega Yachts usually do not have real home ports though the owners must register in a port of the nation whose flag they fly of. Many times the Yachts will never have been navigated to this port. They are especially plentiful in the Mediterranean and Caribbean during the winter and summer. The Mega yachts will locate in a chosen port whilst the crew maintains them and waits for Owners or Guests to arrive. Then, they will make some short sails with the owners aboard. Mega Yachts moving backward and forward between the Caribbean and Mediterranean in the winter and summer are like doing the Milk Run.
